Kevin W. Smith is the former Assistant Regional Inspector General with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Office of Audit (OAS) and a former Senior Auditor at HHS.

Client Services. Healthcare audits can be nerve-racking and sometimes even the first sign of a broader government investigation. With more than 30 years of experience overseeing and managing Medicaid and Medicare healthcare audits for the U.S. government, Inspector Smith is able to offer the necessary advice, experience, and comfort to safely navigate physicians, mental health providers, hospitals, pharmacies, and other CMS contractors through audits or patient record requests.

Government Service. Inspector Smith has supervised countless healthcare audits covering billions of dollars in claims, often in connection with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU), CMS, Medicare intermediaries, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, or the Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigating services billed for but not provided, improper documentation, lack of medical necessity, or instances of billing fraud such as upcoding of service codes and bundling.

Education & Awards. Inspector Smith holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Siena College in Loudonville, New York and an Associate degree in Applied Science/Business Administration from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. He is the recipient of numerous national government awards including but not limited to the CMS Administrator’s Special Citation, Inspector General Excellence in Financial Management, the Inspector General Excellence in Fighting Fraud, Waste, and Abuse, the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, and the OIG Bronze Medal for outstanding employee.

Inspector Smith and his family reside in Albany, New York. He serves Oberheiden P.C. in an independent contractor capacity.
